Instagram Content Clarity Series | Step 1: Decide on Your Ultimate Instagram Goal

Hello and welcome to the first post in my Instagram Content Clarity Series! This is a topic that I’m really excited to share with you. Instagram has become so integral to how many brands and businesses function, and it’s my hope that by the end of this series, you’ll have a clear picture on what to post for your brand, so you can communicate effectively and market your business all at once.

In this five-week blog series, you’ll learn how to better focus your content and provide value to your followers and potential customers, so that you can use Instagram as an effective marketing strategy for your business.

We’ll address the first step in the process today, where we talk about setting your ultimate Instagram goal — meaning, your overall goal for posting on your Instagram account for your brand this month. This is important to look at each time you consider what content you want to post next, because it could dictate the entire direction of your upcoming content! Then after that, we’ll cover how to set your ultimate Instagram goal, and I’ll give you some tips and tricks in case you need some extra help on figuring your goal out. The whole point of picking a goal is that if you know where you’re headed, it’s going to be so much easier to stay on the path and get there!

Without setting a goal, you may still post some great, on-brand content, but your content may not be truly focused, and it may not help you actively work towards your brand goals. It may even feel a little all over the place to your followers, or each piece of content may not be working efficiently to help you meet your business goals.

Even if you have set a goal in the past, it’s really easy to lose sight of it over time in the day-to-day work as you run your brand. When this happens, you risk creating content that is off-brand or irrelevant to your followers. And as an entrepreneur, you can’t afford to waste time on content that is not totally working for you.

So now that you understand why setting a goal is so important, let’s move on to how to actually set it. The very first thing to ask yourself is:

What do you hope to gain from Instagramming for your brand over the next 30 days?

You may want something tangible like you hope to sell products, or it may be something like you’d like to simply increase awareness of your brand. You may also be looking to establish yourself as an expert or build your network and connect with other brands.

One thing I’d like to point out: Although you definitely want to add value to your audience and connect with your audience, when it comes down to it, the main purpose and ultimate goal of using Instagram for your business should be to grow your brand and business, using Instagram as your tool.

Once you’ve decided on your goal, take a moment to write the goal down. It should be a simple goal, but specific enough that you can relate it to how your business will profit from achieving it. For example, you may want to:

  • sell 10 e-course signups

  • book 5 one-on-one clients, or

  • grow the viewership of your YouTube channel by a certain number of subscribers.

Keep this goal someplace handy, so you can remind yourself of it whenever you produce new content over the month. If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d even love to hear about your goal in the comments below!

In order to make your ultimate Instagram goal a reality, you’ll need to create content that stays true to your goal, and you’ll need to earn the trust of the people who will help you reach your goal. In the rest of this series, we’ll cover what that means and how to do it, starting with pinpointing the people who you’re creating content for — your ideal audience!
